Young Carers Activity Project

Young Carers Activity Project Logo

A young carer is 'someone (aged between 13-21) who helps out at home due to a member of the family having a disability, illness or substance misuse problem.

The project is an activity based learning programme to promote personal development.  The six month programme focuses on the Award scheme (Duke of Edinburgh, President's Award and the International Award for Youth) so the young person has set goals for achievement whilst meeting with others developing new sills and ultimately having a good time.

We want the young carers to feel valued and give them the same opportunities as other young people have developing more self confidence, esteem and belief in themselves.

We take 12 young people from North and West Belfast for the six month period and at the end of the programme we can measure their progress and look at appropriate services to signpost them to for their future development.

The group meet each Wednesday night and also have the opportunity to meet for Saturday day walks and they make two camping expeditions as part of their Bronze award.  They meet at the Belfast Activity Centre and get the opportunity to use the caving system, climb the walls and engage in a range or outdoor and indoor activities.
