Launch of the Greater New Lodge Respect programme 2009

What has become a good tradition now, the 174 Trust has hosted the Greater New Lodge Respect Programme

Launch and is featured heavily throughout the programme. The Respect 2009 programme was launched by a couple of keynote speakers most notably Dr Martin McAleese and a number of Northern Ireland MLAs that gave their perspective on the issue of respect in our communities.

Respect Programme2

Dr McAleese said:" In a liberal democracy the ability to cope with difference is the ultimate test.  The flip side of this of course is where people are not respected, where they feel oppressed or discriminated against on the grounds of colour, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, politics or religion.  This results in lives restricted, even closed down but almost invariably results in frustration and the life chances of the individual wasted and the potential of society as a whole diminished.  The more tense this frustration becomes the more likely it is to outcrop in division or indeed in violence".

He went on: "The move from acceptance to respect for difference and diversity in Northern Ireland has given unionists the comfort that N.I. will remain within the United Kingdom until a majority in N.I. decide otherwise by way of referendum to be carried out from time to time as provided for in the Good Friday Agreement.   The removal of articles 2 and 3 from the Republics' constitution has underpinned this comfort".

He later concluded: "The mutual acceptance and respect for difference and diversity is fundamental to the building of relationships, friendships, trust and generosity at both individual and community levels.  It is fundamental for reducing fear, aggression and tension.  And finally it is what will enable us to look at community development in an inclusive way to the advantage of everyone".
